What Is A2 Milk? Why Goat Milk Is Naturally A2
You've probably seen "A2" on milk cartons and wondered what it means. It's not a vitamin or an additive. It's about the type of protein in the milk. Here's a plain-language guide.
Milk protein 101
About 80% of the protein in milk is casein, and one of the main kinds is called beta-casein. Beta-casein comes in different versions. The two most common are A1 and A2.
The difference is tiny: a single building block (amino acid) in a long protein chain. But that one spot changes how the protein breaks down during digestion.
Why A1 vs. A2 matters
When A1 beta-casein is digested, it can release a small protein fragment called BCM-7 (beta-casomorphin-7). A2 beta-casein holds together more tightly at that spot, so it doesn't release BCM-7 in the same way.
Some studies have linked A1 beta-casein to more digestive discomfort in some people, such as bloating or changes in stools. Research is still growing, and results vary from person to person. What we can say is that some people report feeling better on A2 milk, and the science offers a possible reason why.
Why goat milk is naturally A2
Most cow milk in the US contains a mix of A1 and A2, because many dairy cow breeds carry the A1 version. "A2 cow milk" comes from cows specially selected to produce only A2.
Goat milk is different. Research shows goat beta-casein is mainly the A2 type, naturally, without any special breeding. Its protein structure is more similar to human milk than typical cow milk is.
What A2 does and doesn't do
A2 may help some toddlers who seem uncomfortable after regular cow milk, without signs of allergy.
A2 won't help with:
• Milk allergy. A cow's milk protein allergy involves many proteins, not just beta-casein. Children with this allergy usually react to goat milk too. Talk to your pediatrician if you suspect an allergy.
• Lactose intolerance. A2 is about protein, not milk sugar. Goat milk has only slightly less lactose than cow milk.
Is A2 goat milk right for your toddler?
If your toddler is over 12 months and does well on regular milk, there's no need to switch. If they seem uncomfortable after cow milk and your pediatrician has ruled out allergy, naturally A2 goat milk may be worth a try. See how goat milk compares to cow milk and how to make the switch.
Voyager goat milk: naturally A2, simply made
Voyager goat milk is whole goat milk with vitamin D and calcium. That's it. No added sugar, no palm oil, and every batch tested for heavy metals. It comes in single-serve sachets you can mix anywhere with 4 ounces of water.
