Travel Tips for Airports with Toddlers

Travel Tips for Airports with Toddlers

Traveling with a toddler can be both exciting and exhausting! Airports, with their bustling crowds and long waits, can add to the stress. However, with some planning and a few savvy tips, you can make the journey smoother and more enjoyable for both you and your little one. We’ve been there many times – it’s not easy, and there will always be a bit of “drama”, but here’s how we managed:

Pack Smart – You Don’t Need EVERYTHING!!

Packing light and smart is key when traveling with a toddler. Bring only the essentials to avoid being weighed down by heavy bags. Your carry-on should include:

  • Diapers, wipes, and a change of clothes (can’t emphasize the change of clothes enough –including socks!)
  • Snacks and drinks (LOTS of snacks – not the time to try new ones, it’s the time for trusted Goldfish or Apple Slices)
  • Favorite toys or comfort items
  • Wear / bring layers

Arrive Early

Give yourself plenty of time to get through security and handle any unexpected delays. Arriving early allows you to navigate the airport at a comfortable pace and avoid rushing, which can be stressful for everyone involved.

Use a Stroller

A stroller can be a lifesaver at the airport, providing a safe place for your toddler to rest while you maneuver through the crowds. It also allows you to pile it up with jackets, heavy carry-ons and the little one all strapped together!! We traveled with a stroller at the airport until Seb was 4.5, not because he needed it but we did - it was just easier!

Be Prepared for Security Checks

Airport security can be a daunting process with a toddler, but preparation can help. Remove your child from the stroller or carrier before reaching the security checkpoint. Place any liquids, such as milk or juice, in a separate bag for easy access, as they will need to be screened separately. Voyager Milk was created because of a TSA agent that would not let me take whole milk in sippy cups through security, because Sebastien didn’t “look” under 24 months. (I know, I had to bit my tongue or risk not getting on the flight…). You never know what business ideas come out of delays and frustration! 😊

Communicate with Your Toddler

Talk to your toddler about the journey ahead. Explain what will happen at the airport and on the plane. Use simple language and reassure them that it will be a fun adventure. Familiarizing them with the process can help reduce anxiety and make them feel more comfortable. Let them bring a toy plane and find the ones out the window that “match”.

Traveling with a toddler at the airport can be a rewarding experience with the right preparation and mindset. By packing smart, arriving early, and keeping your little one entertained and comfortable, you can create positive travel memories for both you and your toddler.

Bon voyage! Don't forget the milk!
