Is Goat Milk Good for a Sensitive Tummy? (And When It Isn't)
If your toddler seems gassy, bloated, or fussy after drinking milk, you're not alone. Many parents wonder if goat milk might be easier on their little one's tummy. The honest answer: it can help some toddlers, but not all. Here's how to tell the difference.
Why some toddlers find goat milk gentler
It's naturally A2. Goat milk's main protein, beta-casein, is the A2 type. Regular cow milk usually contains A1 beta-casein too, which releases a protein fragment during digestion that some studies have linked to discomfort in some people. Read more in What Is A2 Milk?
It has slightly less lactose. Goat milk has about 11 grams of milk sugar per cup, compared with about 12 grams in cow milk. It's a small difference, but some parents notice it.
Every child is different, so the best way to know is to try it gradually and see how your toddler does.
When goat milk is NOT the answer
Some tummy troubles have causes goat milk can't fix. Talk to your pediatrician before switching if your child has any of these:
• Signs of milk allergy, such as hives, swelling, vomiting, wheezing, eczema flare-ups, or blood in the stool. Most children with a cow's milk protein allergy also react to goat milk, and reactions can be serious.
• Diagnosed lactose intolerance. Goat milk still contains lactose, so it won't solve this.
• Ongoing symptoms like frequent diarrhea, constipation, poor weight gain, or pain. These need a doctor's check, not just a milk swap.
Other things that can upset a toddler's tummy
Before blaming the milk, consider other common causes:
• Too much milk. More than about 2 cups a day can fill little tummies and cause constipation. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends about 16 ounces of whole milk a day for ages 12 to 24 months.
• Too much juice or sugary drinks.
• Not enough fiber or water.
• A recent change, like starting daycare, travel, or a new food.
Our post on common digestive issues in toddlers covers these in more detail.
If you decide to try goat milk
Switch gradually over about two weeks, mixing goat milk with cow milk and slowly increasing the goat milk. Watch how your toddler feels along the way. Our step-by-step guide shows how to switch your toddler to goat milk.
